KBay part Dos: Barcelona Adventure

Sorry for the gap, but here it is, the second installment of the KBay invasion.

With a limited time to spend in Europe, I wanted to maximize Kylie’s time here.  So, when I saw some cheap flights to Barcelona, I booked ’em straight away.  Then, Kylie made sure we had the ultimate Barca experience by picking up tickets to watch FC Barcelona against Osasuna.  So things were shaping up for a great little trip.

Then we hit a snag.  An embarrassingly “first world problem” snag.  We arrived with a 100 euro bill, and found that nobody would accept it in exchange for goods and services.  I attempted to use it to buy bus tickets, to buy lunch, etc. no good.  But more on that later.

We got some great advice to take the hop-on/hop-off bus around town to explore as much of the city as possible in a short period of time.

We also used the time to raise our selfie game.  Obvs.

Barcelona is always associated with art and, of course, Gaudi.  However, we were blown away at how artistically inspired the city truly is.  The variety of artists and their sculptures, facades and monuments dotting the city is incredible.

We hopped off the bus and gawked at Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia.  It’s astonishing to think that by the time construction finishes, there will be nine more spires, and another beautiful facade.

We hopped back on the bus to make our way to Park Guell.  We strolled around in the sunshine enjoying the architecture.

In the end, it was a 7-0 beat down.  It was entertaining, but not gripping.  And not quite exciting enough to distract us from late afternoon hunger.

In the continuing saga of first world problems… we scraped together a couple euros for coffees and a muffin to split.  But come the second half, we didn’t haven enough coin to purchase even the smallest bag of popcorn.  It was lame and hysterical.

Oh, also Messi became Barca’s all-time leading goal scorer at that match. 🙂

After the match, we wandered over to the official store, and scooped up tons of cool merch, and TA-DA broke our Hundred! woooooooo we could eat again!

We also came across a strange piece of merchandise.

We later found out those crapping statues are Caganers.  Traditional Catalonian nativity figures.  No nativity scene in Catalonia is complete without a crapping character, and the tradition has seen the likes of presidents, popes and even Barca players immortalized in that squat.

The next day we jumped on the bus once again.

We treated the Christopher Columbus monument with all the respect it deserves…

We strolled up La Rambla, and stopped inside the famous Boqueria Market.

Then the Gothic quarter for posing and gelato.

There were more espresso-based beverages, and the best pastries evarrrr which we wolfed down without taking pics.

On our last night we made sure to grab some Spanish tapas.

IMG_1234Not too bad, eh Ky?  It’s certainly not her new fave, but she didn’t spit it out-yay!

We LOVED having my sister here, and were so glad she could make the trip!  Thanks for letting me walk your feet off, and talk your ears off 🙂

KBay part 1

The KBay came to Europe!

IMG_0841

Today I offer up the first part of her trip.  The German part.

My sister,Kylie, is a recent college graduate, and deserved a little Euro holiday.  Since she only had 10 days, we packed her days to the brim.  She arrived on a monday afternoon, and I immediately whisked her off to Petra’s birthday celebration.  Dinner and Disco.  Poor thing.  Kylie, being a major trooper, didn’t complain once, even as sleep deprivation hallucinations set in.  Of course, we were all rubbing our eyes in befuddlement at the very poor dancing occurring all over da club.  There were two males engaged in a twerking exercise…i hope that illustrates the scene for you.

After a long first day, and jet lagged sleep, we showed no mercy.  We set off again to explore the city, and make her try falafel.

Selfie Action

On Wednesday, PC’s team had their last league match in Dresden.  If they won in 4 sets, they could lock up the first seed for playoffs.  Being that this was an important match…and that Dresden is a beautiful city, Kylie and I were simply obligated to travel to Dresden.

We started in the newer part of the city before crossing over the Elbe into the old city.

We spent a great afternoon walking around the beautiful buildings in the sun.

Of course, caffeine was necessary. During her time in Europe, we tried to bring Kylie over to the espresso side of life.  The side of life she had unfairly assumed was too bitter an dirty for her liking.  Nobody can deny the pleasures of a latte macchiato enjoyed in the late afternoon sun.

PC’s team gave me a few grey hairs, but eventually won the match in 4 sets to secure the number one seed.

So, the next few days, we had PC on hand for some exploration.

Brandenburger Tor

Whilst in Berlin, we walked Kylie ALL OVER mitte and a fair chunk of kreuzberg and Treptow.  That included a little stop at the original Humboldt Unversität.  She told me that at her Humboldt State graduation, a professor dressed up as Alexander von Humboldt to herald the commencement.  Cool Graduation.

With beautiful weather, we strolled along the East Side Gallery.

And Kylie and I got in one of our only decent pics together the entire trip…and we still look a little derpy.

IMG_1009Tune in again soon for the continuing adventures of KBay in Europe…

Fun and Game

The last week was a lot of fun, with one heartbreaker of a game.

Our friend Florian flew up from Bavaria to spend some time with us.  In addition to walking him all over the city, we decided to hit up the trendy, but irresistible Street Food Thursday at Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg.

IMG_0597

Attracting a wide variety of Berliners, the place is teeming with various expats and a healthy contingent of hipsters.  When you’re jostling through the crowd, it’s tempting to throttle the bespectacled folks fingering wine glasses, and standing between you and juicy barbecued meats.  However, the payoff is so tasty it’s worth a little tooth gnashing and patience.

IMG_0601
So many expats here

In the large hall, dozens of stalls hawking various delectable regional and international dishes.  This particular week we chose a rib roll stuffed with barbecued meat, bacon and potato chips.  Then we grabbed some handmade dumplings, and an order of creamy, cheesy käsespätzle.

Srecko and Tomek came a little later to grab some apple crumble and ice cream.

Handsome Menfolk

Afterward, we stopped in for a quick drink at a bar named for one of the greatest naturalists, and a California icon- John Muir.  It stocked a bar replete with obscure bitters, and a few IPA’s.  Florian, our proud Bavarian, didn’t love the IPA, but was a good sport for trying.  The bar’s vibe was more Berlin than California wilderness, but the cocktails were tasty.

I know the Bay Family will love this

Soon, Flo was on a plane back to München, and Kawika and Paul were on their way to Halle-Westfalen.  Megan and I picked up a young friend to do a little ice skating.

IMG_0616

March 1st brought us sun and blue skies perfect for taking shaky laps on the ice. We had a grand ole time glide/stumbling around the track, fighting the urge to clothesline teenagers zooming past us.  IMG_0626

Before we knew it, it was 5:30 am on Sunday.  We met up with a few hundred sleepy Berliners to hop on buses headed for Halle and the Pokal Finale.

IMG_0634
No bullhorns, no shouting, no chaos…these Germans organize well

Armed with signs, and spirit Berlin fans hit Gerry Weber Stadion like an orange tsunami.

Our sign for Scott

After five hard fought sets, Berlin fell just short of the German cup title. However, they lost as they have won-with class.  I couldn’t be more proud of the way that PC and his teammates fought and dealt with the result.

I really can’t wait for BR Volleys to smash everyone in the playoffs 😉
